Terms of Use

Effective date: May 1, 2026

These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your use of the KanjiCards mobile application ("the app", "we", "our"). By creating an account or using the app you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.

1. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use KanjiCards. By using the app you represent that you meet this requirement. If you are under the age of majority in your jurisdiction, you confirm that you have permission from a parent or legal guardian.

2. Your Account

3. License

We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the app for personal, non-commercial purposes, subject to these Terms.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

5. Subscriptions and Payments

5.1 Subscription tiers

KanjiCards offers the following subscription tiers:

5.2 Billing

Paid subscriptions are billed through your Apple ID. Subscription length and price are shown in the app at the point of purchase and follow the prices set in App Store Connect for your region. Payment will be charged to your Apple ID account at confirmation of purchase.

5.3 Auto-renewal

Subscriptions automatically renew unless auto-renewal is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period at the same price as your current subscription, unless you have changed your subscription preferences.

5.4 Managing and cancelling

You can manage your subscription and turn off auto-renewal at any time in your Apple ID settings: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current paid period; you keep access until then.

5.5 Refunds

Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, not by KanjiCards. To request a refund visit reportaproblem.apple.com.

5.6 Free trials and introductory offers

If a free trial or introductory offer is provided, the trial converts to a paid subscription automatically at the end of the trial period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.

6. AI-Generated Content

KanjiCards uses third-party AI services (currently OpenAI) to generate mnemonic stories, example sentences, and lesson content based on your inputs. AI-generated content may be inaccurate, incomplete, or contain errors. Use it as a study aid, not as authoritative linguistic reference. We are not responsible for inaccuracies in AI output.

7. User Content

You retain ownership of content you create in the app (custom dictionaries, saved tips, notes, photographs uploaded for photo lessons). By submitting content you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, process, and display that content solely for the purpose of operating the app for you.

8. Intellectual Property

The app, including its design, code, branding, and original content, is owned by KanjiCards and protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. The 430 kanji list and lesson structure in the "Japanese Kanji for Beginners" dictionary references the book by Timothy G. Stout & Kaori Hakone (Periplus Editions, 2016). The book itself is not distributed by us and remains the property of its rights holders.

9. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the app at any time for violation of these Terms, fraudulent activity, or actions that harm other users or the service. You may terminate your account at any time. Termination does not entitle you to a refund of any prepaid subscription fees, except where required by law.

10. Disclaimers

The app is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied. We do not guarantee that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will meet your specific learning goals.

11. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, KanjiCards is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of your use of the app. Our total liability for any claim related to the app is limited to the amount you paid us for the app in the 12 months preceding the claim.

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

13. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Russian Federation, without regard to conflict of law principles. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in Moscow, Russia, except where overridden by mandatory consumer protection law in your place of residence.

14. Apple-Specific Terms

These Terms are between you and KanjiCards, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. In the event of a conflict between these Terms and Apple's standard EULA (the "Apple Licensed Application End User License Agreement"), the Apple EULA's minimum terms apply only to the extent required.

Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app. Apple is a third-party beneficiary of these Terms and may enforce them against you.
